Added Value Unit presentation plan

Introduction

Use the success criteria below to write an effective introduction!

·       State the topic you will be examining

·       State which theme both your texts are concerned with

·       Introduce your two texts

·

Example introduction – Do not copy word for word!

The topic I am going to examine for my Added Value Unit is advertising (topic) and I have chosen two texts which both advertise chocolate (theme). The first text is an advert for Yorkie and the second, an advert for Galaxy (introduce texts). Over the course of this presentation I will discuss and analyse both adverts in detail, before evaluating how successful I feel each one is in terms of making the products appealing to their intended target markets (overview of what the presentation will be about).

Now use your notes to analyse your two texts...

Text 1 – Introduce your first advert and state what product is being advertised.

Here is an example paragraph to give you an idea...

The first text that I am going to analyse and evaluate is an advert for Yorkie. First and foremost, it is important to highlight that this advert is marketed at men and aims to encourage them to purchase this brand of chocolate. This is clear to me because of a range of techniques which have been used in this advert to appeal to this group. For example, colour has been used to great effect and in particular the deep blue of the Yorkie bar itself plays on the traditional stereotype that blue is a masculine colour. The bold colours of the Yorkie bar contrast with the bright white of the background and this makes the product stand out and draws our attention to it. Furthermore, the placement of the product has been carefully considered in this advert. The Yorkie bar is situated in the foreground and takes up the entire width of the advert. This close up of the chocolate bar emphasises its large size and this appeals to the male target audience, making it seem like a chocolate bar which is the ideal size for a man. The advert also makes good use of logos to get its message across to the target audience. On the Yorkie bar itself, there is a symbol of a woman which has been crossed out with a red line. The colour red has connotations of danger and this suggests in a humorous way that women should stay away from Yorkie bars. This message is reinforced by the slogans featured in the advert. In large black capitalised font, the slogan across the top of the advert reads, “NOT AVAILABLE IN PINK”. The size of the letters and the capitalised font makes the slogan stand out and the language which is used here is also very effective. The reference to “pink” here again plays on gender stereotypes, implying that pink is a feminine colour and that women would only be interested in a Yorkie bar if it came in pink. Furthermore, this message is reinforced by a blunt statement which is contained in the bottom right hand corner of the advert – “It’s not for girls”. The forcefulness of these words leave us in no doubt that the intended market for this product is male, although done in a tongue and cheek way.  Overall, I think that this Yorkie advert is very effective in appealing to the male market, with a variety of techniques being used to great effect to demonstrate this.

Use the starter sentence below, the example paragraph above and the prompts below to write a paragraph analysing and evaluating your first advert.

Starter sentence: The first text that I am going to analyse and evaluate is an advert for...

As you work your way through the bullet point list below, make sure that you are always considering how well the product appeals to the target audience and how well it is presented.

·       State the intended target audience for this product.

(Think about age, gender, interests, wealth etc)

·       What colours are used in your advert?

(Describe colours used in detail and think about the connotations of these colours. How do the colours appeal to the target audience?)

·       Discuss the lighting used in your advert.

(Does this create a particular mood/atmosphere?)

·       Are any slogans used in your advert?

(Discuss the words used in the slogan and the message that this conveys about the product)

·       Discuss any examples of persuasive language/effective adjectives which are used to describe the product.

(What effect do these words have on making the product more appealing to the audience?)

·       What kind of font is used in the slogan/words contained within the advert?

(Comment on the size, style and colour of the words and discuss how this gives meaning to the product and appeals to the target audience)

·       Are any objects used in the advert to tell us more about the product?

(They might be used instead of words)

·       How much importance is given to the placement of the product itself?

(Think about its size, whether it is placed in the foreground, middle or background etc...)

Text 2 – Introduce your second advert and state what product is being advertised.

Starter sentence: The second text that I am going to analyse and evaluate for this theme is...

·       Discuss any examples of persuasive language/effective adjectives which are used to describe the product.

(What effect do these words have on making the product more appealing to the audience?)

·       What kind of font is used in the slogan/words contained within the advert?

·       How much importance is given to the placement of the product itself?

(Think about its size, whether it is placed in the foreground, middle or background etc...)

Conclusion

·       State the topic you have examined

·       State the theme that both of your texts have been concerned with

·       Summarise the main points of each text and evaluate how successfully each text presents its product and makes it appealing to the target audience.
